“Hello Dechen, it’s S.S. As I sit here reflecting on my day, I felt compelled to text you to say thank you for our session this morning. You have such a gift that you are willing to share with others that I am most grateful. I woke up in such a state that I wasn’t sure how I was going to physically get through my day. Working through the session with you and the others made such a positive impact that my day turned out so much better than I expected. Many thanks and blessings. Have a lovely weekend & week ahead.”

When I quit my corporate job in 2019, I discovered that my ‘Ikigai’ – reason for being – was to help others on their wellness journeys via Tai Chi and Qigong. It’s been a most rewarding personal journey for me, and I haven’t look back since.

My years of teaching at retirement homes and at the Next Step to Active Living program for adults with acquired physical disabilities (including but not limited to Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and stroke), have also given me the experience and ability to offer effective and impactful sessions for people with disabilities.

WHAT IS TAI CHI?H

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that has been practised for over two thousand years.  It consists of a series of slow, relaxed, continuous, flowing movements with focus on breathing that has numerous health benefits for people of all ages and health conditions.

“Chi” (also spelt “Qi”) is the life energy that flows through the body’s energy pathways and is the basis for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  Tai Chi movements are based on the belief that the human body has a system of pathways along which energy travels as it nourishes and heals muscles, joints, bones and organs.  Proper flow of Chi throughout the body’s energy pathways helps maintain essential health. When the flow of Chi is blocked or becomes stagnant, the body feels unwell.

Tai Chi is a popular practice as an exercise option for older adults and seniors since the slow and gentle movements offers the following benefits:

(1) improved balance and leg muscle strength to help reduce falls

(2) enhanced core strength to build stability and reduce back pain, and

(3) improved overall circulation throughout the body.

Concentrating on each movement helps the mind relax, thereby relieving stress, and the person is often calmer and has more energy after a session. For its mental relaxation component, Tai Chi is often compared with yoga and has been described as ‘meditation in motion’.

WHAT IS QIGONG ?

“Qi” or “Chi” ‘ means energy. “Kung” means art. So Chi Kung (spelled “qigong” in Romanized Chinese), is the art of energy.

Quoting Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit from his book “The Art of Chi Kung”, “Chi Kung is the art of developing energy, particularly for health, internal force, and mind training.”
